Letter to the editor

An interesting picture has been brought to my attention. It shows two large cars in a garage having a major service and repairs being done. The car on the left is an Abbott Detroit Battleship Roadster and the one on the right is a Packard. I am guessing this was taken in the mid-teens. The location is a small rural town of Armstrong in the interior of BC. These large powerful and expensive cars are out of place in such a town except for one possibility and that is they are 'open air taxis'. These are the type of car which took over from the stage coaches starting around 1908. It is possible Armstrong was their home base. I did find a photo of what might be this car on the Cariboo Wagon Road.

On another matter a while back I submitted a photo taken in1917 in Stanley Park. There were two cars I was asking to be identified. The one on the left looks to be a Cadillac, but the one on the right, a big roadster, was a head scratcher and the best I could figure is a Napier. However. having looked at a variety of Abbott Detroits on the internet I saw their 1910 roadster and it is a match for the car in Stanley Park.
