Automobili Lancia: an in-depth look at Vincenzo’s early years
New automotive books devoted solely to the early history of a marque are few and far between. All the more reason to appreciate when an author ventures into this relatively uncharted territory. Renowned Lancia historian Wim Oude Weernink does exactly that with his latest work, Automobili Lancia – Vincenzo’s Formative Era.
As one would expect from Oude Weernink, the book is the result of meticulous and in-depth research. It is richly illustrated with period material, ranging from photographs of early Fiats and Lancias to rare archival documents, including the original founding act of Lancia & C Fabbrica Automobili, signed on 29 November 1906.
The English-language volume is clearly structured and opens with a portrait of the man behind the marque, Vincenzo Lancia. Oude Weernink traces how Lancia began his career as an accountant and designer at Ceirano, later becoming involved with Fiat following its formation and subsequent developments, where he gained valuable experience as both inspector and test driver. His combination of technical insight and business instinct laid the foundation for a marque that, albeit in evolved form, continues to this day.
The subsequent chapters explore the earliest Lancia models, supported by period photographs of motor shows, advertisements, and detailed accounts of the people behind the company’s production. The reader gains insight into the rapid expansion of the firm: within just a few months, seventy employees were already at work, supported by dozens of machines and tools. Sales strategies, brochures, and the positioning of the brand are also examined in depth.
Particularly engaging is the chapter devoted to early motorsport. It illustrates how manufacturers were already using competition as a means of publicity, a strategy in which Lancia himself had been involved during his Fiat years. The book also highlights the important role of international distributors who, with or without factory backing, successfully campaigned Lancia cars in competition.
The post-First World War period is given due attention as well. Developments within the company, including the expansion into commercial vehicles, are clearly outlined. A notable digression is the discussion of the American Lancia SGV. Although not officially part of the marque’s lineage, Oude Weernink presents it as a relevant derivative that deserves its place within the broader narrative.
When thinking of classic Lancias, the distinctive V-engines inevitably come to mind. As early as 1915, Lancia was already experimenting with this configuration. Oude Weernink examines this in detail, supported by technical analyses, illustrations, and archival material. A particularly interesting addition is the chapter on maintenance: Lancia recognised its importance early on and issued comprehensive guidelines for the adjustment of all models, including the da corsa variants.
The book is clearly written with passion, and although that enthusiasm occasionally shines through, the tone remains informative and accessible throughout. The result is an engaging and authoritative reference work for classic car enthusiasts in general, and an essential volume for anyone with a particular interest in Lancia.
