The Alco was a high quality car built by a subsidiary of a well-known locomotive manufacturing firm. The cars were built under Berliet licence, and were more often called American Berliets up to 1908. The first models were chain-driven 4-cylinder machines, of 24 and 40hp, but shaft drive was introduced in 1907 on a 16hp 4-cylinder car mainly used for taxicab work. A 60hp 6-cylinder car appeared in 1908. The latter was the most famous Alco model, and was made with expensive open and closed bodywork priced at $6.000 to $7.250. In 1909 and 1910 Alco cars won the Vanderbilt Cup.
