The Briscoe car, originally designed in France, was manufactured by Benjamin Briscoe, formerly head of Maxwell. Several thousand of the 4-cylinder Briscoe cars for sale, using a 2½-litre engine of his own make, left the factory in nearly eight years of production. There was also an ohv Briscoe V8 in 1916. The early Briscoe cars featured a single or ‘cyclops’ headlamp which was built directly into the radiator cowling. In the autumn of 1921, the Briscoe car became the Earl, which was outwardly similar to its predecessor.
