Appropriately enough, Claude Grahame-White, the aviaton pioneer, operated from Hendon airport. Like other airmen, Grahame White turned to cars after World War 1, when the market for aircraft almost vanished overnight. Grahame White company made luxurious bodies for expensive chassis such as Rolls-Royce, but his complete Grahame White cars were at the other extreme. The Grahame-White Buckboard was just that: a platform on spindly wire wheels with a rudimentary bucket seat on top. The engine on this Grahame White car was a 3½hp, 348cc single-cylinder unit, brought to life by a kick-starter. There were two forward speeds. A 7hp friction-driven Grahame White car was also offered, and even what sounds like a normal light car, with a water-cooled, 4-cylinder, 1.100cc Dorman engine.
