Thornycroft had been making steam lorries for about seven years when they put their first Thornycroft cars on the market. These Thornycroft cars were a 10hp twin and a 20hp 4-cylinder car, both with automatic inlet valves, gilled-tube radiators and shaft drive. By 1905 the Thornycroft cars were of much more modern appearance, with honeycomb radiators similar to the Mercedes, and mechanically-operated inlet valves. The 20hp Thornycroft car had become a 24hp, and the following year a new 14hp 4-cylinder model Thornycroft carwas introduced with monobloc engine and overhead valves. From 1905 to 1908 the Thornycroft car firm competed in the Tourist Trophy races, their best performance being Tom Thornycroft’s 5th place in the 1908 race with a Thornycroft car. In 1909 there were three models Thornycroft cars, an 18hp four, a 30hp four, and a 45hp six, all Thornycroft cars with monobloc engines and overhead valves. However, commercial Thornycroft car production was becoming more important, and all models Thornycroft cars but the 18hp were dropped after 1912; Thornycroft car production ceased altogether at the end of 1913.
