The Wartburg car firm – a part of the Ehrhardt concern – started car production under the name of Eisenach. The name Wartburg was chosen for the Decauville Voiturelle built under licence. This Wartburg car was equipped with a rear-mounted 2-cylinder engine, either a 3½hp air-cooled or a 5hp water-cooled unit. This small Wartburg car was quite popular and was produced in large numbers. Front-engined models Wartburg car were built after 1900. These were 2-cylinder Wartburg cars of 5, 6, 8 and 10hp and 4-cylinder Wartburg cars of 15, 30 and 45hp. In 1904 Ehrhardt left the Wartburg car firm and subsequent models were marketed as Dixis. Ehrhardt himself started car manufacture under his own name.
The Warburg car name was briefly revived revied by BMW in 1930 for a sports version of their Austin Seven-based Dixi.
