Hershey has been a PreWarCar mecca since the beginning and, as we saw yesterday, the auctions still reflect that because there is so much to choose from. But choosing the right car for us is not as easy as it seems. Ranging from US-built Steamers to European Coupe de Ville, we counted 82 cars built before 1945 in RM Sotheby's 15th annual Hershey sale, held on 7 and 8 October 2021. We could have chosen our favourite ABC cars, such as this fantastic Supercharged 1935 Auburn, the Art Deco design of the 1939 Buick Special Sport Coupe and the beautiful unrestored 1913 Cadillac Model 30. But no, we chose two early long-distance Tourers as our favourite cars in the sale.
The perfect brass-era car for long-distance touring, the six-cylinder Locomobile has always been one of our favourite early American cars. The way it sits on the road, combined with the 142-inch (3.60m) wheelbase, the impressive engine (475 to 525.5 cubic inches), the use of the best materials and its luxurious appearance are all reasons for us to want to own the 'Best Built Car in America'. The Locomobile offered is a 4th series Model M, which had the 525.5-cubic inch (8.6 litres) engine with 82 horsepower. It was used extensively by the previous owners and we are sure that the new owners will do the same!
When we talk about a long-distance tourer, a veteran car might not come to mind, but Alexander Winton built his cars for driving. When he went to a show to promote his cars, he drove them on the road to show their reliability. He liked a challenge and this was reflected in his cars. The example in the auction is a beautiful two-cylinder Rear-Entrance Tonneau. The car has been dated by the FCC as a genuine 1904 car and it has in the past done the famous London to Brighton. We saw the car on that occasion and it was impressive. And yes, the car is capable of long-distance runs — it did from San-Francisco to New York City a few years ago in the hands of Manny Souza.
