Genevieve Returns with Spyker in Tow
Last Wednesday the organisation of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run unfolded its plans for the upcoming event during a press conference at the Louwman Museum in Holland. Certainly not a strange venue, because automobiles from Dutch manufacturers will be this year’s featured marque(s). This means that not only Genevieve (a 1905 Darracq) will drive to Brighton, but also the 1905 Spyker that played its opponent in the famous 1953 movie (click for a scene from YouTube). Both cars are in the collection of the Louwman Museum and were among several LBVCR cars displayed in the Great Hall. Also attending the press conference was Dutch Prime Minister Jan-Peter Balkenende who -because of the heavy rain outside- took the Benz for a spin inside.

Spyker always 1904 until after the film Genevieve then the Veteran Car Club said it was 1905 making the car to old for the London to Brighton run. My Father Frank Reece owned this car and believed this decision was made out of jealousy because of the cars fame. My Father donated his fee from the film to the club.

The answer is to start a new event to replace the London to Brighton. The Emancipation Run. It will be free to enter and it will by run without RAC or VCC interference. Both the RAC and VCC had a major sense of humour failure when they were informed but there is nothing they can do to prevent the event.

G'day from down under,
I watched the Car Crazy Show on Australian television tonight, where I looked up your web site and noticed that you have the 1905 Darracq (Genevieve).
In the seventies I drove the Darracq (Genevieve) from Sydney to Coolangatta for the Gilltraps Museum.
I also helped a Mr. Ben Brock (a Dutchman) who owned a museum at Watson’s bay near Sydney for some years, as was young then I enjoyed working with the many fine cars he had.
I have been around the vintage car movement since the sixties and still like playing around I have owned a 1924 8/18 Humber chummy, restored some years back and now wait for a bit more scrub and polish with tender care.
It was great to see some of your great cars.
