It may be November now, but in a few months time it will be April, the weather will be warming up and the countryside will be brightly painted in all the colours of spring. In other words, it'll be the perfect time to play the 'gentleman gypsy' and see the beauties of the season from behind the wheel of a handsome touring car, with a suitable caravan in tow. Of course, if you're one of our Antipodean readers, you've no need to wait at all? Why not hitch your home-from-home behind your vintage car and go touring right now.
Of course, it really won't do to go caravanning with some run-of-the-mill fibreglass job with an inexplicable name like Coachman Amara or Bailey Senator Indiana. You'll want something with style and character, a homely cottage on wheels - something like the 1931 Guildford caravan which you see in these photographs along with a delightful 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II.
Both are very interesting vehicles in their own right. The Phantom wears elegant sports saloon bodywork by Thrupp & Maberly and was actually supplied new to an owner an New Zealand. The sports saloon body clearly dates from later in the 1930s, which corresponds with the fact that the car was rebodied at some stage after its original coachwork had been allowed to deteriorate.
The Guildford, however, may be a far rarer artefact. We've no idea how many there are in existence today, but when did you last see one? With its timber-framed interior, latticed windows and tiny stove with a copper kettle on top, it really is just like a country cottage in miniature. It would be most at home, in fact, in the rolling hills surrounding its namesake Surrey town, where you could take a walk to the picturesque church atop St. Martha's Hill, see the romantic ruins of St. Catherine's Chapel by the banks of the River Wey, or take a brisk drive to the hallowed concrete of Brooklands.
Perhaps you've got experience of vintage caravanning, in which case please tell us all about it. If, on the other hand, you lack a caravan but think you'd enjoy one, this pretty pair is looking for an enthusiastic owner.
For sale with Vintage & Prestige, they are individually priced at £108,000 for the Phantom and £18,000 for the caravan, but the best thing is certainly to buy them together at the special price of £125,000. Take a closer look here.
