The faces of the Pioneer Motorcycle Run 2025
Once again, I found myself drawn to the start of the London to Brighton Pioneer Motorcycle Run on a crisp Sunday morning — that familiar mix of petrol, polish, and quiet anticipation hanging in the cool dawn air.
More than 300 riders and their magnificent machines gathered at Tattenham Corner, on the edge of Epsom Racecourse, as the first light crept over the horizon. This year marked the 85th running of the event, a living tribute to the earliest days of motorcycling. Alongside the famed Pioneer Class of pre-1915 motorcycles, the run also welcomed the Pioneer Plus machines — those built before 1930 — each one proudly ridden by enthusiasts keeping history alive.
At precisely 8 a.m., the convoy set off, the rhythmic chug of single-cylinder engines echoing across the Downs. Riders and spectators alike shared smiles and waves as the procession rolled south, winding its way toward Leonardslee Gardens for the traditional coffee stop.
From there, the run continued through the Sussex countryside, the morning mist giving way to sunshine as the riders pressed on to Brighton City Airport at Shoreham, home to its beautifully preserved Grade II-listed Art Deco terminal building. It’s here that the run reaches its finale — engines cooling, laughter filling the air, and a century of motoring heritage brought vividly back to life.
I’ve put together a selection of photographs captured at dawn — portraits of riders, gleaming details of their bikes, and moments that define the spirit of the event. I hope you enjoy seeing the faces of the Pioneer Run as much as I enjoyed meeting them.
