Identify brass era automobile

Letter to the editor

This is a picture sent to me by a friend. His grandfather is sitting in the front passenger seat. He is wondering what make and year car this is. I have searched pictures of all the cars manufacturers that were manufactured from 1896 through 1906 (brands according to Wikipedia's listing of manufacturers). I have yet to find any that match the characteristics of this car. The car in this picture has some unique features that help to narrow down the year it was made and also what makes it isn't. For example, with only one headlight and no windshield, it's probably from between 1903 and 1906. The grill, with its perfect curve at the top, eliminates a lot of manufacturers. Two of the stranger features are the scroll work on the armrests (which I have yet to see in ANY pictures from this era) and the front fender that doesn't even reach the 12 o'clock position over the tire. Thanks for any information you can provide.

The radiator is a match to the 1906 Soules truck, qv. The 1906 Soules was also a LH steering as this one. Both are semi high wheelers. Whether Soules ever made cars is unknown, but worth a look.

Some other observations:
- Rear fenders appear to be Patent Leather
- radiator and hood could have been added later. That was a common practice on this side of the pond.
- no brake drums on rear wheels
- rear springs are full eliptical. Fronts are half eliptical with very dainty frame horns.
