What do Frazer Nash cars and bicycles have in common? Beyond their use of chains, they share a connection to the historic Boulogne Grand Prix Circuit. This year marks both the anniversary of R. C. (Clive) Gallop’s 1925 victory in his Frazer Nash and the 47th Boulogne Vintage Bicycle Ride.
Originally a 23-mile racing circuit famed in the 1920s, Boulogne saw celebrated drivers like Sir Malcolm Campbell setting lap records. In 1977, a group of Vintage Sports-Car Club members decided to cycle the old route, giving birth to what has become one of the V.S.C.C.’s best-kept traditions.
Held annually during the early May bank holiday, the ride once attracted up to 200 cyclists, setting off from Boulogne’s mediæval old town. Riders on everything from penny-farthings to bamboo-framed bikes would ascend the hill to the 13th-century château before following a mix of historic and rural routes.
This year’s ride, on May 25th, coincides with a Frazer Nash Chain Gang raid celebrating the 1925 win. Although modern development has altered parts of the original circuit, landmarks like the St Martin’s war memorial remain on the route. The ride now covers approximately 20½ miles, starting with a ten o'clock departure from the cobbled old town.
The course winds through charming countryside, offering plenty of refreshment stops at friendly local bars and a traditional picnic lunch at Alincthun. With amenities kindly provided by the local Marie, riders of all ages—from three to 83—are warmly welcomed. While vintage bicycles are encouraged, all types are allowed, staying true to the spirit of "anything goes."
Though numbers dipped post-Covid, there’s a renewed enthusiasm for vintage cycling. This year, with the additional spectacle of nearly 100 Frazer Nash cars converging on Boulogne, the event promises to be a truly unforgettable experience.
Whether you complete the full route or just a part, maps, GPX files, and shortcuts are available to make the day enjoyable for all. Come and be part of this unique celebration of cycling history, vintage spirit, and stunning French countryside.
