The Rediscovery of a Dutch BMW 327: Passion, Craftsmanship and Quality

To question the beauty and reliability of a pre-war BMW would be futile. These cars are globally recognised for their exceptional quality and timeless class. However, a BMW which has been completely neglected is much less to be admired. To restore it to its prime is a formidable task; it requires knowledge, passion and craftsmanship to finish a such a car to the same high standard that was set when it left the factory.

At Interclassics Maastricht, which takes place from January 16th to 19th, 2025, a very special BMW 327 will be shown. On January 27th, 1940, this car was delivered by Dutch BMW importer Nibbrig & Greeve in s'-Gravenhage. Resplendent in its beautiful Enzianblau (Gentian Blue), the first owner must have been very proud of his new acquisition. In later times, however, the car went through a less glorious period before, eventually, it fell into the sympathetic hands of a restorer. It is therefore more than just a survivor—it is a car which only exists today thanks to hours of perseverance and tireless toil.

From wreck to wonder: the restoration journey of the BMW 327

The current owner, a passionate restorer, had previously owned a 1939 BMW 327. When the opportunity arose to acquire a second example, he was very keen, but it was clear that this particular car was in a state of severe disrepair. Most of the enthusiasts who had already been to inspect it dismissed it as beyond salvation, but the owner knew that it within the abilities of a seriously committed restorer to bring it back from the dead. He saw in it a tantalising challenge to put his own restoration skills to the test with a project so vast that it could truly be called once-in-a-lifetime.

The car was transported to a workshop, accompanied by a load of spare parts, and the restoration process began. The vehicle was completely disassembled in order for the owner to establish a detailed restoration plan. The woodwork was in poor condition and needed to be entirely replaced. Many parts of the bodywork were rusted or damaged, requiring careful renewal. Every component was inspected, and where necessary, parts were sourced from around the world to ensure that only the best and most appropriate were used.

Technical perfection and aesthetic refinement

The mechanical components were completely stripped down and rebuilt. Every part was meticulously inspected and repaired or replaced. New wings and panels were installed, and the bodywork assembled body was eventually prepared for paint, so that the beautiful streamlined design of the 327 could once again be witnessed in all its former glory. The car was then painted in the familiar blue and cream colour scheme which one immediately associates with BMWs of the late 1930s.

However, the owner was not looking to have a mere show queen; the technical side of the restoration was equally crucial. The long process of reassembling the running gear and drivetrain produced no end of head-scratching problems, but day by day the restorer's mechanical expertise succeeded in bringing it closer to completion. After months of hard work and patience, the result was a beautifully restored BMW 327, which has since won several concours awards.

A new beginning: from restoration to driving

Despite the outstanding result, this BMW 327 has not actually covered a great distance on the road. As the owner already owns another 327, this delightful machine is now looking to be enjoyed by another enthusiast, someone who will not just appreciate it for its technical and æsthetic qualities but make full use of its excellent engineering by taking it for long drives on some of the finest roads.

For the present owner, restoring the BMW 327 was more than just a way of occupying his time. It was a channel for his passion, a challenge for his skills, and an opportunity to save an irreplaceable object of timeless value. Now it's time for the next chapter; this car needs to be used as BMW originally intended.

Visit Interclassics Maastricht and discover this unique BMW 327, a testament to the what can be achieved by one talented craftsman, and to the excellence of its original designers.
