Masterful craftsmanship in the heart of Belgium: A visit to Arie-Jean Vintage Car Restoration

On an unassuming industrial estate in northern Belgium, a gate slowly opens with a soft hum. We are immediately greeted by a wagging, jumping dog—the unofficial welcoming committee of Arie-Jean Vintage Car Restoration. Behind this modest entrance lies a world where craftsmanship and passion for classic cars come to life.

Inside, a serene calm prevails, interrupted only by the sound of tools and the quiet chatter of five young mechanics. Arjen, the driving force behind this workshop, insists on his team mastering every skill. “They must be capable of everything, from engine overhauls to bodywork,” he says with conviction. He recruits his employees directly from the technical school where he once studied. The oldest mechanic is only thirty and has been working for Arjen for eight years. It is a young team, absolutely dedicated to bringing vintage cars back to life.

An unexpected journey into the world of classics

Arjen’s journey into the realm of vintage cars didn’t start with a family history steeped in classic automobiles. His fascination began with mopeds and later American muscle cars. It wasn’t until he was 21 that he took his first steps at a technical school. Shortly after, he went to Great Britain for an exchange year that would change his life forever. There, he began working as an apprentice for Arthur Archer, a renowned specialist. “That’s where I learned to work at the highest level,” he recalls.

At Archer's, he mastered the art of restoration, frequently working on cars for P. & A. Wood, the respected Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialist. When a Belgian collector approached P. & A. Wood for help a few years later and they didn’t have the capacity, they referred him to Arjen. This was his first major client, and from that moment on, everything changed.

From unknown beginner to trusted craftsman

Upon returning to Belgium, Arjen had big plans to start his own business, but without a network, it was a challenge. Determined, he travelled to fairs and events to build connections. At one of these events, he met a prominent Belgian collector. After seeing Arjen’s work in England, the collector entrusted his entire collection to him. It was the start of a long-lasting partnership. “That client drives his cars a lot and hasn’t had any issues since,” Arjen proudly shares.

This success is due to their dedication to research and innovation. During our visit, they were working on the overhaul of a magneto ignition using a self-restored Sun Tester. This commitment to perfection is evident in every corner of the workshop.

Masterful restorations and innovations

The workshop houses rare gems like a fully-restored Bugatti T46. From the wheels to the bodywork, everything is handcrafted or custom-made. They are also working on a dynamo for an Invicta S-Type Low Chassis, creating a flexible coupling after extensive research and precision laser-cutting.

Arjen and his team complete an average of six major projects per year, but the workshop is now overflowing. One striking feature is the impressive array of equipment. Over the past eighteen years, Arjen has gradually built an arsenal of machines, from conventional metalworking tools to advanced CNC machines. “We want to be able to do everything ourselves, from making leaf springs to producing gears,” he explains. This independence guarantees the highest quality and safety, even at speeds of 120 m.p.h. in a Bugatti.

Uncompromising quality

Arjen keeps a close eye on everything, primarily acting as the quality controller to ensure the highest standards. During our visit, he showed us a gearbox from a Bugatti T43 with custom-made gears. “Not quite perfect yet,” he noted critically, giving his mechanic instructions for final fine-tuning.

His commitment to perfection comes at a cost. He sells reconstructed Bentley Three-Litre engine blocks through PreWarCar.com, made using reverse engineering. Every step of the process is meticulously checked, from casting to final assembly. “That quality control makes it more expensive, but it’s worth it,” he emphasises. His clients understand this and are willing to pay for the unmatched quality and precision Arjen delivers.

A future full of ambitions

What sets Arjen and his team apart is not just their craftsmanship but also their vision. In a world where traditional skills are gradually disappearing, Arie-Jean Vintage Car Restoration remains faithful to tradition and quality. They continue to grow, investing in knowledge and equipment, with the ultimate goal of completing every project at the highest level.

As we leave the workshop, the dog joyfully greets us once more. As the gate closes behind us, one thing is clear: behind this unassuming façade lies a world of passion, craftsmanship, and pure love for vintage cars—a world that is thankfully far from fading away.
