Patagonia Challenge: keeping the spirit of the Baquet alive

The Baquet holds a special place in Argentina’s automotive history. These lightweight machines, born from the Fuerza Libre and early Turismo Carretera traditions of the 1930s, are defined by mechanical honesty: exposed wheels, minimal bodywork, and engines that communicate directly with the driver. There is little insulation from the outside world. Wind, dust, temperature and terrain all become part of the experience.

In November 2025, twelve Argentine Baquets returned to public roads for the first edition of the Patagonia Challenge. These simple, open machines – inspired by the stripped-back racing cars that shaped Argentina’s early motorsport culture – covered nearly 2,000 kilometres, from the vineyards of Mendoza to the lakes of Bariloche.

The route follows the legendary Ruta 40 southward through some of Argentina’s most remote landscapes. Participants cross volcanic plateaus, the arid Patagonian steppe, river canyons and the foothills of the Andes before reaching the forests and lakes of the Andean lake district.

Progress is measured less in speed than in endurance. Gravel roads test every bolt and bracket, the weather can shift within hours, and mechanical improvisation often becomes part of the daily routine. It is precisely these challenges that give the experience its meaning.

Long stretches of road invite reflection. Conversations continue during carefully planned stops along the route and shared moments on the journey. Short breaks to stretch legs, check the cars or enjoy a quick snack become part of the rhythm of travel.

And then there is the landscape. Patagonia has a way of putting things into perspective. The horizon is vast, the roads are long, and the sky feels impossibly large. At moments when the engine settles into rhythm and the road stretches toward the mountains, the modern world feels very far away.

A friend once said: “Life is better from the seat of a Baquet.” After a week on the open roads of Patagonia, it is hard to disagree.

The next edition of the Patagonia Challenge will take place from 9 to 16 November 2026, featuring a revised route through new regions of Patagonia while preserving the long-distance spirit that defines the event.

Participation is intentionally limited to maintain the character and pace of the journey. Entry includes a Baquet!

Classic speedsters are a worldwide phenomenon that cross country and cultural borders. It would seem that "Baquets" belong to this very inclusive group—a group that sports enthusiasts keep returning to.

Thanks for posting this. Long live the baquets and the Patagonia Challenge!
