A tough end to a tough year. 2020 has been extremely challenging, as was our annual Christmas Quiz, it would seem. Although there were ‘only’ 35 questions and 7 mystery photos, it did not prove to be at all easy.

Not one participant was able to get all answers correct, but we did get a lot of good answers. And we have a top 3! First, the questions and the answers.

Questions Day 1

1b) Which cars were most important in the movie Genevieve? Darracq 10/12HP and Spijker 14/18 HP  (make alone is enough)

1c) Which make that founded the Auto Union group started selling cars first, and in what year? Horch in 1900/1901 (both years are good)

1d) Who was the chief engineer of the company that is the predecessor of the Cadillac Automobile company? Henry Ford (we also accept Henry Leland as correct)

1e) Which make was never a make in the ordinary sense of the word as there wasn’t a company or factory with that name, but was instead named after a magazine? English Mechanic

2d) Who built the first Wolseley cars? Herbert Austin

2e) Which American PreWarCar was the first car to have a St. Christopher medal on its dashboard as standard equipment? The Wasp car

2f) Which make do we see in the lead photo? Mystery Photo De Dion Bouton

3a) Which make was the first to use the name ‘Voiturette’ for its car? Léon Bollée

3b) What was the original model by the designer of the SextoAuto? Reeves Motocycle

3c) Which make changed the colour of the letter of the radiator emblem when one of the founders died and what was the original colour? Rolls Royce, red

3d) Which car was the worlds first production car to have fully independent suspension? The Sizaire Frères Type 4 RI from 1923

3e) Which make built 50 cars in 1907 and a year later took them all back to give the new 1908 model out for free? Regal Motor Car Co

4c) In which city did the Emancipation run end in 1900? Southsea

4d) What make was the winner of the first Monte Carlo Rally? Turcat-Méry in 1911

4e) Who won the Paris-Bordeaux race in 1898? R. de Knyff

4f) Which event do we see in the lead photo? Mystery Photo 1898 Paris-Amsterdam

5a) What was the first car that was bought by Winston Churchill? Mors (1901)

5b) Name a Russian company that accommodated automobile production at its railway factory? Examples are: Russo Baltique, Yakolev & Freze, Leninrad L1

5c) Name 4 Dutch coach builders. Examples are: Van Rijswijk, Pennock, Akkermans, Nefkens, Schutter & van Bakel, Van Leersum, Veth & Zoon, De Ley

5d) Who drove the first motor Tricycle in Western Australia, and in what year? Both Armand Bargigli in a Leon Bollée Voiturette and Anthelmina Serpolette on a motor Tricycle are accepted as correct. Year is 1898.

5e) Which make broke the world record for the fastest diesel car in 1939? Hanomag

5f) Which make and type do we see in the lead photo? Mystery Photo Hispano-Suiza H6B

Questions Day 7

 

7a) Which American brands were assembled both in Poland and Romania before WW2? Ford and Chevrolet

7b) Which make was founded by Charles B. King and Jonathan Maxwell? Northern

7c) Who was the driver that broke the Land Speed Record with the Œuf de Pâques in 1902, and by whom was the earlier record held? Leon Serpollet, Camille Jenatzy

7d) In which year was the Hungarian Grand Prix held, before WW2? 1936

7e) Which German make was building cars from 1904 to1909 and became more well-known last year than it had ever been before? Corona

7f) What car (make and model) do we see in the lead photo? Mystery Photo 1898 Mors Voiture Fermee

 

The winners

 

Out of all the participants, no-one was flawless. However, there were a lot of correct answers. Also answers that increased our knowledge. Thank you for that.  Our judges Laurens Klein of PreWarCar.com and Pal Negyesi had a hard time to come to a conclusion but a winner of the 2020 PreWarCar.com Christmas Quiz has been chosen. The winner not only has the opportunity to brag all year about being the winner, but also receives a subscription to The Automobile magazine for a year.

Correction: we did our best to make this information as accurately as possible and do not pretend that our knowledge is flawless. New information came to our ears about the mystery car on day 5 and we made some corrections. This does not affect the winners.
