The only surviving Renault Primaquatre Saprar?

In January last year work was started on this very special 1938 Renault Primaquatre; and now click the mainphoto for today's appearance. The attractive sporty roadster is a - don't stumble over the words - 1938/9 Renault Saprar Sport Roadster by Pourtout. As we picked up from wikipedia a mere 10 units were made. The Peugeot Darl'mat - also by Poutout - came in an 'abundancy' of 105 units and many of those survived or were replicated. Not so with the Saprar (Société Anonyme Pièces Réparations Accessoires Renault). It is our impression Saprar not only provided materials and parts for these cars yet also did market them. Like they did with the Juvaquatre Saprar convertible

We see from the restoration that the current owner likes to wink in the direction of Darl'mat, at least that's what we think judging the Darl'mat like buttons on the side of the hood.... Anyway we started to wonder how many of the 10 survived. Except for the the car depicted here we only found period photos. So Saprar owners - also of all other Saprar models tread forward out from your barnes and into the light.

On page 210 of 'Renault, l'empire de Billancourt' there is another photo taken at the same time as your 'original' picture here. It shows that both the cars had the sweeping chrome spear on the bonnet (hood!) side and also what appear to be several small opening vents- but no 'buttons'. Also, the light colour car is indeed without a windshield, so it would meet Guillaume's definition of a 'roadster'. Absence of a windshield may have been normal at Renault, but was very rare for other makes of car by 1938/9. Were goggles on the accessories list? Both the 'original' cars are pictured without bumpers and I'm glad the current owner has not tried to refit the rather ugly one shown in the 'before' picture of his car! He should try to find/ make a set of period hub caps, though.

Hello,
From my understanding, the roadster would be without winshield. With winshield, it is a convertible. Both versions were available from Pourtout.

We, as the les-Renault-d-avant-guerre.com forum, would be very glad if we can get in touch with the current owner for this car.

Kind regards,

Guillaume Bonafous-Murat,
Co-chairman.
