A 'sheet-shaker' Tatra 57b 1940

A nice photo of a lesser known Tatra, a 57B of 1940. It made us think of the sheet shakers, a photographic 'pre-adobe photoshop' trick to add a neutral background to a car photo. Mocci Demartis, collector from Sardinia - mentions not only the rarity of the car. This one was used by the germans as a personel car in WWII (in military 'grau' of course) and later was kept in the Resistance Museum of Prague. Mocci claims that the forced air cooling system of the post-war Porsches was copied from this Tatra (editor: we found no proof for that...). Based on the colour of the wheels and upholstery the car was restored in burgundy over black.

Hans Ledwinka was undoubtedly one of the most genious constructors but also one of the most humble ones. His own answer on the suggestion of the likenesses between his rear boxer engined air cooled 1931 study model and a the type 32 Porche was "one time Mr Porche takes an idea of me and next time the other way around". They knew each other quite well and had the same roots. The genious of these constructors was in combining existing ideas with their own inventions in new ways and in a continuous striving for perfection.
I own myself a 1937 Tatra 57A and must admit that it made me curious to know more about the man behind this impressive little car which combined partly existing ideas to something incredbly effective, smart and durable.

I think that it predates either of these makes - Franklin and SARA come to mind. I'm not sure that it can really be called an invention at all though. It is just the natural end point of trying to get air moving uniformly over and around an air cooled engine. Rapid development can be seen in air cooled aircraft engines as hp / rpm started to increase.

For quite some time, Tatra enthusiasts have discussed similarities between Hans Ledwinka's and F. Porsche's designs. Especially a comparison of the very little known 1937-1938 Tatra 97 (rear-flat-4 OHC, air-cooled, streamline, backbone-chassis) and the Porsche design KDF car/Käfer is very interesting: The design similarities are fascinating!
