Last Saturday, we were at Mallory Park in the UK for the Vintage Sports-Car Club's final race meeting of the year. By chance, we met Tim Wadsworth, who is still racing at the remarkable age of 89.
In 1959, while still a college student, he spotted an abandoned Lagonda in a car park. After searching the local pubs, he eventually tracked down the owner, and a deal was struck for £50. The Lagonda has now been his favourite car for 67 years. He has travelled with it throughout Europe, raced it with the VSCC and, according to his daughter and enthusiastic supporter, taken it apart a million times.
That he is not merely taking part for fun became clear once again on Saturday: after a 40-minute battle against 14 other competitors in the Longstone Tyres Long Car Race, he finished a thoroughly well-deserved third. I think this could only happen in England...
Kind regards,
Luc Ryckaert
