The Friday Lady Special: three women and a racing vision

Every now and then, some photographs arrive at the editorial desk which are too good not to publish, even though we know nothing at all about them. Such is the case with these delightful little snapshots, which show three women looking very proud of what, we have no doubt, is an exciting speedster project in its very early stages. Of course, it's entirely possible that they've simply lighted upon an abandoned chassis and, having a camera to hand, have decided to mess about with some pictures, but we'd prefer to think they saw their vision through to completion and turned up at a hill-climb a few months later on with a natty little racer and a challenge to the status quo.

It raises a lot of questions: who?, what?, where?, when? and why? are all appropriate. The car, we'd hazard a guess is from the early 1920s, so for it to have reached this rather tired state, the photograph must have been taken well into the 1930s. The car in the background and the ladies' attire would seem to support that idea. As for the location, it's probably somewhere in Britain, but it could be anywhere in the world. It's especially hard to have an educated guess when we don't even know the identity of the car.

While a bit more bonnet and a glimpse of radiator would be a godsend to us, we confess that we're actually not too hard done by. We have a reasonably good view of the chassis, at least, and the steering wheel, right-hand brake, wheels, axle and springs are all features which could indicate to a more knowledgeable mind than ours what the identity of this vehicle is. You know what to do...

It's a circa 1925 Clyno 11h.p. or 13h.p. Note the quarter-elliptic cantilever rear springs and gear shift and handbrake on the right-hand side.

I am going to suggest a Willys-Overland. The scuttle is quite square as in my attached picture.
