These Caddies were old-timers in 1921

According to the dictionary an old-timer is a ‘very experienced or long-serving person’ or simply ‘an old man’. And the costume-wearing bearded men, of which three can be seen in this picture, is what they look like to us. Or at least that’s how they were depicted back in 1921, when this picture was taken. That’s over a century ago and definitely old-time in today's terms.

Cadillacs

However, the two cars shown, both Cadillacs, were considered to be ancient by 1921! One of them dates back to 1905 and was 16 years old; the other one was supposedly of 1902-vintage — Cadillac’s initial year of motor manufacture — and thus 19 years old. Translated to today, those cars would be 2003 and 2006 models respectively. The original caption reads: ‘Antique Cadillacs - still running’.

What struck us, apart from the overall fun factor and the great picture quality, was the lack of pneumatic tyres on the 1905 car. Did it really drive around like that? If it made over 200,000 miles in that configuration it would be quite a miracle to be able to withstand that. Oh! It does say ‘First 4-Cylinder Cadillac built’ on the bonnet, which would make it the Cadillac Model D with its 4.9-litre capacity that was launched in January 1905. That model is considered to be the first luxury car from the company. The 1902 car has to be a Model A with the one-cylinder engine of 1609cc capacity. Could they have survived another 101 year after this photograph was taken?

It looks as though the vehicles may have been pushed out of the substantial building behind them.

So the 1905 car is a Model D, 1st of the 4 cylinder Cadillac's as the sign say on the hood, it had 33 x 4 tyres all round. Cadillac built 152 of these in 1905, in 1921 it was 16 years old.

The car marked as a 1902 is actual a 1904 Model B single cylinder, so 17 years old not 20.

A lot to unpack here. The earlier car has a front hood that suggests it could be 1904.
The truss rod may be a clue. Not sure Cadillac ever offered a front seat with a lazy back.

The later car seems more intact. And is an extremely rare example. I’m betting that she carries
22 inch rims. That’s an almost impossible tire ( 30 X 4) to find today, and was already obsolete in 1921.

I like old father time's false beard which seems to have blown round his face - unless of course it was the vibration from those tyreless wheels! Looking more closely, they're all false beards since the seated men seem to have dark hair.
Presumably in those days proof of longevity for a car manufacturer would have been of considerable importance for new car sales.

I agree with Mike Clark - there's too much space between wheel and wing (fender) suggesting tyres have been removed.

I doubt the 1905 car had solid tyres but is shown without its detachable rims and inflatable tyres. It just looks wrong as the wheel overall diameter is so small. The occupants loòk wrong too!
