What is it? Quiz #480

This Saturday we have a Lady presenting our pre-war quiz car. We show you just one photograph of this "race car" which was hardly a true sports car. But thanks to the lightweight construction and low silhouette its 18 hp were enough for a maximum speed of 100 km/h.

Do you know where we are talking about and/or do you recognise this pre-war car?

Please send your answer to this week’s quiz before Monday evening in max 100 words. And do not forget the new element we added! Write down at the bottom of your comment / answer the source(s) you used. These additional words do not count extra and are not included in the 100 words. Then you compete in the six-month competition, sponsored by Hans Compter Rare cars.

Have a good weekend everyone!

I would guess that since it is boat-tailed and a two seater, it might be a Bugatti Type 40. However, it is different, perhaps built for the German or French market, since it has Left-Hand drive.

This is a DKW Typ PS600 (PS = Personenwagen Sport), built from 1929 to 1932, designed by Rudolf Slaby. This rear-wheel driven sports car was based on the Typ P15, but due to a strengthened crankshaft it developed 18 hp instead of 15. Its wooden unit body was covered with "Saxonian green" fabric to contrast the white wings and wheels. Less than 500 of these sports cars were built, about 6 survivors are known plus some replicas. Three PS600, driven by Hans Simons, Kurt May and Ilse Krause took part in the 1930 Rallye Monte Carlo and reached the finishing line.

DKW Sportwagen Type PS 600-Sport of 1930 or 1931. First DKW car built at the Berlin-Spandau factory and built by Dr. Slaby. Factory was opened on 7th May 1928. The car had a watercooled twostroke engine and rearwheel drive. Unibody made from wood and covered with fake leather (skai). High priced with a primitive body and used a lot of twostroke mix. Engine was loud and used a lot of sparkplugs and people didn't trust the overal quality of the car, but still it found a lot of buyers because of the sportive shape with the pointed tail and long bonnet even if there was a small engine under the bonnet. Most buyers were ex-motorcycle owners who were familiar with twostroke engines.
Technique: Engine had only 584cc and 18 hp at 4000 rpm, 100 kmh, 3 speed gearbox, 4 wheel drumbrakes and was a light car at 530 kg. Price 2500 rm.

Dear prewarcar-team,
oh, the beautiful appearance...

DKW PS600 Sport, 1930 - 1931 , 500 cars built, front mounted 584 ccm 2stroke-2cyl engine with 18hp, rear-wheel drive, three-speeder, rigid axles, cable-operated mechanical foot brake acting on all four wheels, parking brake on the left front and the right rear wheel. The car with self-supporting body made of plywood with synthetic leather cover was only available as this pretty, but weak, noisy and quickly rotting roadster. Produced in Berlin-Spandau.

Beste groeten uit Zandvoort :-)

P.S.
