1910 Mercedes 10/20 information required

Tim Jones form New Zealand writes: "This is what we believe to be photos of our 1910 Mercedes 10/20. We wish to research the car from the parts that we have, but we are lacking any more information than the attached pictures. There does not seem to be any information about the 10/20 anywhere on the internet. The Mercedes records have told us that the car was delivered in September, 1910, as a chassis (without body) to Milnes Daimler, the sales agent for Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft in the UK. Milnes Daimler ordered the car for the New Zealand Farmers Motor Company.

The chassis we have has been cut and we are unsure what measurements to weld it back to so we can fit the motor and diff and begin restoring the car. Any other pictures anyone has or information about the 10/20, aka 15/20 and 10/25 Mercedes would be helpful. Our body, we believe, was to have been built by Mulliner of Coventry. Does anyone know if records exisit from their early coachbuilding? Is there anybody who can help?

All technical data of the Mercedes 10/20 PS including the measurements of the chassis are easily accessible online with the "Mercedes-Benz Public Archive". Just Google for "Mercedes-Benz Archive 10/20" and you should find the required information. Regarding the wheel base, there were at least two different available as usual, back then (2780 or 2985 mm). In the written literature a third one can be found: 3075mm. Of course, the individual length of your car may have been different depending on the type of body and/or date of manufacture.

Hello, good gentlemen, I am Gustavo from Argentina and I have found a complete chassis of a 1903/04 chain-drive Mercedes Simplex, apparently a 40/60 hp. This car belonged to a Señor Juan Blas Gaston of Spanish origin, who settled in 1902 in a small town in the province of Santa Fe in Argentina where he founded the first general store, car agency, Spanish centre and several other things. He was also the first mayor of the town.

This man had another Mercedes Simplex seven-passenger tourer from 1906 and this other one, after being used for some races, was left as a spare for the previous one and was dismantled. Then the complete chassis was used for agricultural purposes with the body and engine remaining in the family but separated from the rest of the car... In this state, I am determined to buy them and put them back together, but for now it is a difficult task that will take me some time. I need to be able to discover details about my chassis and particularly what its chassis number could be since it has many stamped numbers in different places. I will be grateful to receive help from you to be able to undertake the care and restoration of this car. I could use all kinds of information about this model: plans, bibliography, catalogues with numbers and manufacturing items, etc. This is so difficult after so many years, but it is fun and it's important to be able to achieve it.

Hola buenos señores, soy Gustavo de ARGENTINA y e encontrado un chasis completo de un Mercedes Simplex 1903/1904 tracción a cadena.. aparentemente 40/60 HP, ESTE AUTO pertenecio a un sr apellido Juan Blas Gaston de origen Español, quien en 1902 se radico en un pueblito de la provincia de Santa Fe de Argentina adonde fundo el primer almacen de ramos generales , agencia de autos, fundo el centro Español y varias cosas mas tambien fue el primer intendente del pueblo, este señor tenia otro Mercedes simplex 7 pasajeros de 1906 y este otro el cual luego de ser usado para algunas carreras dejado como repuesto del anterior y fue desmontado y el chasis completo fue utilizado para cuestiones agricolas cuya carrocería y motor fueron a manos de una parte de la familia separándose del resto del auto... tema al que estoy abocado a conseguir comprarlas para juntar todo.. pero por lo pronto es una tarea difícil que me llevara algún tiempo- yo nenecito poder descubrir exactitudes sobre mi chasis y particularmente cual puede ser su numero de chasis ya que tiene muchos números estampados en distintos lugares.- estaré agradecido y me alegraría mucho recibir ayuda de vosotros para poder llevar adelante el amado y restauración de este auto..me sirve todo tipo de información sobre este modelo, planos, bibliografía, catálogos con numeraciones y partidas de fabricación, etc etc. cualquier ayuda con esto que es tan difícil después después de tantos años, pero es tan divertido como importante poder lograrlo. abrazo Gustavo Perez

Hi Tim.

Interesting Mercedes.
After looking in my â€œlibraryâ€ I found a German instruction book â€œDie Mercedes Cardan Wagen von 10/20 und 14/30 PSâ€ from 1912. 113 pages in German language with descriptions of main parts (i.e. engine, ignition, clutch) and handling this car. And 4 attachment with drawings of engine (2), clutch and chassis (without any body work).

Hi Harry, Our commission papers state that it has a "karossable RahmenlÃ¤nge" as 2400 mm.

Tim, i have a 1908 Mercedes Simplex 35 hp shaft drive car in Australia, and a number of documents relating to wheel base and frame length.

If you have the Commission papers, it should list the frame length. This length is for the length of the chassis from the firewall to the rear cross member for mounting the body on (Rahmenlange). For my car this is quite long 2755mm and wheel base of 3380mm. The wheel base of the two cars you mention are different. The 10/20 wheelbase is 3075 mm and track is 1350 mm.

It is very original and has never been tampered with, so even though it is earlier, it may give some good indication of how to do things. I can be reached at by e-mail
