Paris-based manufacturer Amilcar was founded by Andre Morel and engineer Edmond Moyet to build high-performance cyclecars and voiturettes.
Amilcar's first model, the CC, entered production in 1921 and featured the company’s own four-cylinder 904cc side-valve engine. The CC was replaced in 1924 with the CGS which became the company’s most successful model remaining in production until 1929. The CGS featured four-wheel brakes, a longer and stronger chassis and a larger 1074 cc engine which in addition to a lightweight two-seater body the CGS made the car a popular competition entrant.
It is believed chassis 18737 was initially delivered to Australia before being sold in the 1970s to a gentleman from Surrey who later sold it on to a Mr. Simonite of Chesterfield. The Amilcar was then purchased by a lady enthusiast who competed with the car in many Amilcar club and VSCC events and in the winter of 1991/1992 enlisted the car as her daily driver!
In 1992 the car was sold by Sotheby’s and joined a Belgian collection where it remained for some ten years before being offered for sale by Belgian classic car specialist Bernard Marreyt.
The Amilcar was the subject of a comprehensive restoration that took place between 2011 and 2021 and included a full engine rebuild around a new cylinder block and an in-period Cozette high-performance cylinder head. The original (repairable) cylinder block and head will be included in the sale.
Any machining work was undertaken by Formhalls Vintage & Racing and other works included rebuilding the magneto, re-spoking and powder coating the wheels and an interior retrim in brown leather.
This rare and attractive Amilcar CGS comes with VSCC eligibility papers and is now available for sale in great condition and ready to be enjoyed.
