A Rare and Highly Original Example with Long-Term Dutch History
Offered for sale is an exceptionally original and remarkably complete Fiat 509 Torpedo / Spider, preserved with many of its original components, fittings and period details still intact.
For the serious collector of early Italian motor cars, its principal appeal lies not in restoration, but in authenticity, completeness and provenance.
Over the course of nearly a century, many surviving Fiat 509s have been restored, modified or separated from their original fittings and accessories. This particular car is unusual in retaining a remarkable amount of original material and presents as an exceptionally honest survivor.
The Fiat 509
Produced between 1925 and 1929, the Fiat 509 was an important model in Fiat's development towards large-scale automobile production.
It was powered by Fiat's advanced 990 cc four-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft, coupled to a three-speed manual gearbox, and was capable of approximately 78 km/h (48 mph).
The open Torpedo / Spider body is particularly attractive, combining elegant Italian proportions with the simplicity and character of 1920s motoring.
Remarkably Preserved Originality
This Fiat has a long-established Dutch history and retains its Dutch registration.
Of particular historical interest, the car is also accompanied by its original provincial Dutch registration plates — a rare and evocative detail directly connected with the car's early history in the Netherlands.
The body remains remarkably original and shows no obvious evidence of extensive structural welding or modern alteration.
Importantly, the original engine remains with the car.
The interior retains its original upholstery, which has survived in remarkably good condition considering its age. The original dashboard, instruments and numerous period fittings and details also remain in place.
Rather than having been comprehensively restored to modern concours standards, this Fiat retains the materials, character and traces of age that can only be acquired through genuine history.
Exceptionally Complete
Perhaps most remarkable is the degree to which the car's original equipment has remained together.
The original folding hood is complete, including its frame and associated components.
Even more unusually, the car retains its original removable side screens, allowing the open body to be fully enclosed when required.
Such detachable accessories are frequently missing from motor cars of this age, having become separated from the vehicle during the course of many decades. Their survival with this Fiat is therefore an important aspect of both its completeness and historical integrity.
Original Fiat Documentation
Accompanying the car is an original Fiat Album Parti di Ricambio, covering the Fiat 509, 509S and 509F.
This original period parts catalogue contains detailed technical illustrations together with handwritten annotations. It is a fascinating historical document in its own right and a particularly appropriate accompaniment to such an original motor car.
For the Preservation-Minded Collector
Early motor cars combining originality, completeness, period accessories, documentation and established historyto this degree are increasingly difficult to find.
This Fiat 509 should therefore particularly appeal to the collector who values preservation and historical integrity above the appearance of a newly restored automobile.
It represents a rare opportunity to become the next custodian of a highly authentic example of an important early Fiat, while preserving the materials, details and character that have remained with the car for approximately a century.
Sale by Discretion
The car will not necessarily be sold to the highest offer.
Any sale will take place only following consultation with the family. Preference will be given to a knowledgeable and sympathetic new custodian who appreciates the historical significance of the automobile, will preserve it with care, and intends to retain its remarkable authentic character as far as possible.
