The American Simplex make used 4-cylinder, 2-stroke engines, initially of 40hp. These were later increased to 6.8-litres and rated at 50hp. For 1910, three open models and two closed versions were offered, ranging in price up to $5.400. The American Simplex name was changed to Amplex in 1910 to avoid confusion with the better-known Simplex of New York. This change coincided with a company reorganization.
