The Elfe cyclecar first appeared as a monocar or tandem bicar with a front-mounted V-twin engine and V-belt drive to the rear wheels. The 1920 Elfe competition version had an 1100cc V-twin Anzani engine at the rear, and final drive by chain. This Elfe was also a tandem two-seater, in which driver and passenger of the Elfe car sat on saddles; if the passenger became tired, he had nothing to lean on but the hot exhaust pipe. This Elfe machine, driven by Mauve, Elfe’s designer, competed in the Cyclecar Grand Prix at Le Mans from 1920 to 1922 but never with any distinction, on one occasion lapping at only 19mph. Elfe did, however, win its class at the Nice flying kilometer trials in 1921. In 1923 Mauve began to make a more conventional car under his own name.
