The Terraplane car replaced the original compact Essex Six late in 1932. The Terraplane car was a conventional 2.6-litre sv 6-cylinder car with a 3-speed gearbox selling for $475 in the USA and £295 in England; though the Terraplane car failed to make such impression at home, its 70mph top speed and low running costs brought the Terraplane car many admirers in Europe. A companion 4-litre straight-8 Terraplane car for 1933 had a 94bhp engine and offerd 85mph for only £385; the Terraplane car formed the basis for the first Railtons. The 1934 line f Terraplane cars was restyled with a striking V-grille and independent front suspension, and used Hudson’s 3½-litre 6-cylinder engine, though 2.6-litre versions were made for export. The Terraplane cars were again restyled, along with the Hudsons in 1936, when hydraulic brakes were added. After 1937, the Terraplane car name was dropped and its place taken by Hudson’s new small six, the 112.
