Help identifying a Joseph Lucas headlamp

Letter to the editor

While sorting through an inherited collection, we found a headlamp with the following markings: “Made in England – Joseph Lucas, Birmingham – LBD 166 – Limited England.” Based on its appearance and the markings, we believe it may date from the pre-war era or possibly the Second World War period.

We would be very grateful for any guidance you can offer regarding its approximate age and the vehicle(s) it may have been fitted to. Any historical context or identification tips would be much appreciated.

The lamp was Fitted to 1936 Humber 18hp, 1938 imperial and 38-39 super snipe . Also a 2 litre MG SA 1937 and 1938 MG VA 1.5 litre. The lens should be a semi flat glass with U shaped lens pattern or similar not a domed cats-eye as shown. Also a 7” replacement reflector has been fitted over the original. Information came from a Lucas 400B 1931-1939 parts catalogue Regards Anthony Pearson
