Hershey: changing times, familiar faces

Our regular contributor Mark Snowden is back in the United States for his annual visit to Hershey, hunting for cars and parts among the countless stalls. After three or four days on the fields, he reports that the familiar gathering is changing.

“There seems to be much more automobilia these days,” Mark observes. Cars and mechanical parts increasingly share space with collectibles, vintage petrol pumps and other motoring memorabilia. There are still plenty of stallholders, but the rhythm of the week feels different.

“Today is Thursday. Five years ago, that would have been a big day, but now many people are already packing up and preparing to leave.”  The crowds are still there, too, although Mark notes that grey hair remains rather more common than youthful faces, a familiar sight across the historic motoring world.

Yet for anyone who enjoys searching for that elusive component, discovering an unexpected treasure or catching up with fellow enthusiasts, Hershey still holds its appeal. The contents of the stalls may change, but the pleasure of the hunt remains.
