The International St. Moritz Automobile Week is just around the corner. A week full of classic car events in a beautiful Swiss mountain resort that must be one of the most stunning locations for a classic car event

We have already discussed the Targa Poschiavo Engadina, which takes place from 3 to 5 September (one of the participants is your editor so we will try to share pictures). Today we want to highlight another important event in the week: the RM Sotheby's auction that will take place at the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski in St. Moritz on 9 September.
 
As one can imagine, the catalogue contains many high-class car brands. Mainly post-war ones like Maserati, Ferrari, Bentley and even a Williams GP car, but only one PreWarCar. And what a car!
 

1936 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante

 
Introduced at the 1936 Paris Motor Show, the Type 57S was built on the success of Jean Bugatti's first solo project. With a completely redesigned 'Surbaissé' (drop frame) chassis that was both more compact and lower than that of the Type 57, the flamboyant machine had a front axle that pivoted in two halves and a rear axle that ran through the chassis, rather than over the chassis frame. Power was provided by an improved version of the Type 57's 3.3-litre straight eight-cylinder double overhead camshaft, with a revised dry-sump lubrication system influenced by the racing Type 59.
 
The body shape of the Atalante is one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the classic car world and, together with its radiator style, it is true art. Seventeen Bugatti Atalante Coupés were built on a T57S chassis, and the example presented here was the first to leave the Molsheim factory in 1936.
The car has been used regularly over the years, as it should be as far as we're concerned (even though it would not be out of place in any art museum) and is now available for a new caretaker.
 
The price, estimated at between 10 and 12 million Swiss francs, is not for the faint-hearted, but then again such quality art is never cheap.
