In the Easter spirit, London 1936

Easter and eggs go together like Christmas and mince pies. And these girls certainly seem to be getting into the spirit of the Easter festivities. The photograph was taken on 8 April 1936 on Oxford Street in London, a few days before Easter that year.

Unfortunately, we do not know who they are, but it seems safe to assume they were very privileged, being driven into the city in a chauffeur-driven car for Easter shopping. A Rolls-Royce, surely?

Those giant Easter eggs may have come from Thorntons or Prestat on Oxford Street. These confectioners were known to create a giant egg, displayed in their window until Easter, when it would be donated to a local children’s hospital. But if you had the means, you could undoubtedly buy one too.

Happy Easter!

The car would appear to be either an Austin 18 or 20. Apart from the style of the body, the Austin winged wheel emblem is visible on the running board.
