Information sought for a JAP Ligenza engine

Letter to the editor

Good morning,

I am trying to trace the origin of a vintage motorbike which has a JAP Ligenza engine with the following characters stamped on it: KO CZ 857 X 85 39368. Thank you in advance for your kind attention.

Kind regards,

Officine Biaschelli

A British J.A.P. engine built under licence, most likely in Italy. The letters and numbers correspond with the J.A.P. engine code system.
K = 500cc
O = overhead valves
C = sports engine
Z = dry sump lubrication
85.7x85 = bore and stroke

According to the 1939 edition of Pitman's book of the J.A.P., dry-sump lubrication became available in 1932 on standard motorcycle engines. So this engine was most likely built between 1932 and the Second World War.
