Lanchester back on the road

The attachment some people experience for a particular car can be difficult for non-enthusiasts to grasp, but it remains a very real sensation. When the restorers of this 1934 Lanchester 10, with its unusual and stylish coupé body by Mulliners of Birmingham, learnt that it was languishing in a garage after decades of neglect, they knew they had to save and resurrect it, no matter the cost.

The Lanchester, you see, had been their own cherished car some 50 years previously, when they were at the vanguard of the movement for preserving everyday 1930s cars. Over a period of a few years, before practical considerations they faced as young parents forced them to rehome the car, they enjoyed many happy outings in it with their young son and in the company of other enthusiasts.

Unfortunately, the years of abandonment had taken their toll on the Lanchester and, blinded somewhat by their sentimentality, its rescuers took it home, not realising that it needed rather more work than was obvious. Fortunately, two years’ hard work, with the help of specialists and the Daimler & Lanchester Owners’ Club, has paid off and the Lanchester looks as good today as it ever has done. For his Back On The Road series, Zack Stiling investigates its restoration in the November issue of The Automobile, available now.

That is a very pretty motorcar! It amazes me the dedication that people have to save a car. Each of my brass era cars were brought back from the dead, well, even far past the dead. And only because somebody had the dedication, sacrifice and probably stubbornness to see it through. So, to all of you who have done this for a car, today and in the past, THANK YOU! You have helped preserve a small part of history......keith
