Dieter Dressel, proprietor of the Central Garage museum has long been fascinated with the Gordon Bennett Cup, the first international racing series. Stemming from an idea by James Gordon Bennett Jr., the Gordon Bennett Cup was held for cars between 1900 and 1905. Originally organised by the Automobile Club de France, the Gordon Bennett Cup was set to champion the international auto industry – each country was allowed to nominate three entrants. By 1903 elimination trials were held to find the most suitable candidates. By 1905 the industry became so diverse that it was impossible to hold onto the rules of the Cup any more so from 1906 the era of the Grand Prix started.
The 1904 Cup started in Bad Homburg, which prompted Dieter Dressel to cooperate with noted German historian Thomas Ulrich on a book featuring the race. The book, which will be published in 2024, has also resulted in another idea – a website.
