(Range) Rover ramblings

The lavish Land Rovers and Range Rovers of today may not be associated with the Rovers of yesteryear now. But back in 1969 things were quite different.

When the Range Rover was launched, some of the more imaginative PR-shots were made. The ones we came across saw a Range Rover towing a 1912 Rover 12hp landaulette on a trailer and fording a river. Well, why not? The mighty 12hp must have been part of Rover’s works collection at the time and is, it seems, still to be found in the British Motor Heritage Museum. Quite a car.

Thinking about it, the Rover was about 57 years old by the time the original Range Rover was launched, which is when this picture was taken. But we bet the Rover really must have looked like something from another time and age. Now, if today’s latest Range Rover were to be pictured with the original Range Rover classic behind it, there would be a 52-year timespan between the two vehicles. But to say there are worlds between the two vehicles? We don’t think so. What does that say? Is the automotive industry nearing its end?
