Three young PreWarCar Reporters visited Cité de l'Automobile in Mulhouse

We encourage youngsters to get enthusiastic and involved in the classic car world. When we heard three youngsters planned a trip of 700 km to see the Schlumpf collection we asked them to tell us afterwards about their experience in the museum. Which they did, they wrote a feature about their day in the museum, all the cars that are exhibited and other things that are important for youngsters. Do not forget to look at the photographs they made during the day!

“As three young (all 20 years young) classic car enthusiasts, we went on an adventure to admire the extensive Schlumpfh collection located near Mulhouse.

The collection offers a wide variety of brands, including De Dion Bouton, Ballot, Panhard & Levassor, Mors, Pilain and Dufaux. Amongst the cars, there were some exceptional (early) examples: an 1893 Peugeot, a two-seater Jacquot dating from 1878 and a blisteringly fast Serpollet steam car exceeding speeds of 110 km/h. Besides the diversity and beauty, like some of the roaring beasts like Bugatti and Gordini (although these are eye-candy too). From the entire collection, Bugatti can be seen in different types and years throughout the building and is therefore well represented. When one needs a break, a visit to the museum’s cinema is a worthy option to get some rest and view some extraordinary cars from back in the days.

The short description corresponding to every car there is also an option to get a free audio tour which gives additional relative information. Think of details about carbide lamps, technologies and famous Grand Prix drivers. For youngsters, this is an approachable way to get in contact with pre- and post-war cars. Furthermore, the accessible anecdotes used and the informality of the museum add up to this.

Despite all the positive aspects of the museum, the food served in the cafeteria lacks the beautiful status of the cars on display. In short, the museum is definitely worth a visit for all who love classic cars. As we had a wonderful experience here, we specifically want to address youngsters to make a trip to the Schlumpfh museum.”
