What is it? Quiz #471

This weeks quiz car is a real car, of course, all our quiz car are or were real cars. But this one is still drivable. The grandfather of the current owners bought the car in 1920 from Germany where it had served in the war. Which means the car is in the family for almost 100 years, 98 to be exact. The grandfather was a priest, so he had a driver who took him around in his district.

Maybe you recognise the “look” of this car. But we will also give you some (technical) hints, which might be helpful to you:

- The car has 21 horsepower, 4 cylinders and 2000 cc with side valves.

- The car has a 4-speed gearbox with a leather cone clutch. The gearbox casting itself is made of aluminium.

- The handbrake is working on the rear wheels, and the car has no brakes on the front wheels.

This is certainly a tough cookie, and looking at the picture it is taken in a British museum. In the background you have a glimps of a Bowler hat and up front you can see some of motorcycle history. There were several car makers who delivered cars for military purposes in World War One, like Brennabor and Opel even Horch it is hard to tell which one it is. These cars were used to transport troops to the front or used as ambulances. I’m in doubt between a Horch and a 1910 NSU 10/20 I hope it is the latter.

Absolutely not sure this time. I guess it is a 1912 Horch 8/24 PS Phaeton. The 8/24 PS was built from 1911 to 1922 and was an attempt at the lower-price market, together with the 6/18 PS model.

Dear prewarcar-team,
here my solution to this nice weekend-quiz:

Opel 8/20 PS, four-seater Doppelphaeton, built from 1910 to 1913 by the Adam Opel KG in Rüsselsheim.
Water-cooled four-cylinder-engine with 2032 cc, 20 hp at 1600/min, top speed 65 km/h. Block made of aluminum, head made of cast iron, manual four-speed gearbox and cardan to rear axle.
Both rigid axles were suspended on semi-elliptical longitudinal leaf springs. The inner shoe brake acted on the transmission output shaft. There were as further body styles, a two-seater Phaeton, a six-seater Doppelphaeton, a four-door Sedan and a Landaulet.
The cheapest variant (Phaeton) cost 6900 RM.
Successor was in early 1914 the 8/22 hp.

For me the car looks as a 1912 Opel. I compare with my 1912 Priamus as have the same type of body as you can see on the photo.
My car is also German, made in Cologne

It is Adam Opel 5/12 or 5/14 Ps Püpchen. Year cca 1914.

In the picture Oryx Typ K2 7-21ps of 1914. The K2 series was produced by Oryx Motoren-Werke in Berlin from 1913 to 1914. This series in small quantities in 1913 was supplied to Russia.
