1929 Lancia Lambda 8th Series Short-Chassis Torpedo

With its monocoque body, four-wheel brakes, independent front suspension and V4 overhead camshaft engine many enthusiasts view the Lancia Lambda as one of the greatest automobiles of all time. With a conventional pedal layout and H-pattern gear selection the Lambda also set the automotive template for years to come.

The Lambda was also successful in competition with privately entered cars finishing fourth and fifth behind the works OMs in the first Mille Miglia of 1927.

The Lambda was continually developed through nine series of cars with the 8th and 9th series receiving a larger 2570cc engine and four-speed gearbox.

Chassis 21293 is a desirable 8th series example with the standard Tipo 223 (short) torpedo body built at the Lancia factory in Turin.

The original buff logbook on file confirms the car was first registered in the UK on the 28th September 1929 and the earliest recorded keeper (from 1947) being Group Captain Ernest Alton Healy, an RAF pilot based in Deddington, Oxford. Ernest was the son of Irish barrister, journalist and former editor of The Irish Times John Edward Healy (1872–1934).

By 1950 the Lambda was registered to John Denham Hutchinson of West Wittering, Sussex and in 1951 was purchased by Pilot Officer Colin Mitchell Smail of Dundee, Angus. Sadly, Colin was killed in a flying accident in Suffolk on the 25th October 1951 aged only twenty-one. The Dundee road tax renewal for his Lambda was stamped on the 19th October, only six days before his untimely death.

The next recorded keeper was Graham Warner of Ipswich who owned the car in 1952 before selling it on to David Lander of Woodhouse Eaves, Loughborough.

In 1957 the Lambda was owned by arch Lancia enthusiast Stanley Bannister, the owner of the Elletson Arms Hotel in Pilling near Preston.

The car was then purchased in 1964 by the current owner who has owned the Lambda for an incredible sixty-two years.

Original invoices on file show an engine rebuild in 1966 by Gunner & Allen Motor Engineers of Lee-on-Solent and in 1967 renowned coachbuilders E. D. Abbot of Farnham restored the bodywork and painted the car in the current shade of green.

The history file also contains original MOT certificates from the 1960s and 1970s, including one from Phoenix Green Garage dated 6th December 1968.

Latterley the car has been maintained by Paul Atkinson Engineering Services of Derby and a new hood and sidescreens were fitted in 1995 by David Beswick Coachtrimming also of Derby.

This unmolested Lambda is now available for sale from an extensive Lancia collection and incredible 62-year ownership. It has been used sparingly for the last twenty-five years and benefits from a replacement cast aluminium cylinder head fitted in 1995. The removed cylinder head is included in the sale.
