Stylish, well-engineered, and affordable, the Fiat 508 was Italy’s original “people’s car”, debuting more than two decades before the popular 500 of the 1950s would assume the mantle. Produced from 1932 to 1937 with assembly spanning multiple countries, the ‘Balilla’—as it was nicknamed—became the first Fiat with production exceeding 110,000 units. It was initially offered in two-door Berlina, two-seater open Spider, and four-door open Torpedo versions, powered by a short-stroke 995-cubic-centimeter side-valve inline four-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission.
A lightweight, competition-oriented spider debuted in 1933 with svelte bodywork designed by Carrozzeria Ghia. It would eventually become known as the Fiat 508S ‘Balilla’ Coppa d’Oro, named after an eight-day, 3,500-mile endurance race across Italy in which the 508S proved highly successful, dominating the 1,100-cubic-centimetre class in 1934. It featured sweeping front wings, cut-down doors, a narrow cabin with passenger seat set slightly behind the driver, and a unique rear-end treatment with a single vertical fin. Early examples of the 508S ‘Balilla’ Coppa d’Oro had an uprated version of the side-valve four-cylinder engine and a three-speed gearbox. A more powerful version arrived in 1934, powered by a revised inline-four with overhead valves and a four-speed gearbox.
The example offered here, fitted with the more powerful overhead-valve engine, was delivered new to Germany and is accompanied by period registration papers that verify its ownership history up to the 1960s. Believed to have later been taken to Japan, in 1998 the Fiat was acquired at auction by David Mead, a renowned car collector who had acquired another 508S five years prior. He would register the Fiat with the Vintage Sports-Car Club in 2003 and retain it as a prized possession alongside his other 508S.
Though exact production figures for the 508S Coppa d’Oro remain unconfirmed, these competition-oriented variants with lightweight, hand-crafted bodywork were produced in far smaller numbers than standard 508S models. With its proven competition pedigree, it is welcomed in prestigious vintage road rallies around the globe, making this example a lovely entry into the world of vintage motoring.
