1934 Railton -Hudson Original Alpine Trials Racer

By 1933, Railton built a variety of the larger versions which were powered by Hudson. The Hudson engine and chassis were built in the US and exported to England for Railton.

This 1934 Railton is one of the two original Alpine Trials cars sponsored by Railton and driven by Habmit Davids. Both cars not only completed the trials but also scored perfectly achieving 1,000 points and were awarded the prestigious Glacier Cup. This car was built using a sporty and lightweight, two-door, four-passenger touring car body which was constructed by the London based coachbuilder Berkeley. This car retains its original coach-built body and the large Hudson eight-cylinder engine and drivetrain.

This car is believed to have remained in the UK until the late 1960s when purchased by Roy Tausch of Novelty, Ohio. He purchased the car from a Robert Rose of Derbyshire, UK. Existing photos of the car from the 1950s and 1960s show the car to be a well cared and in very good original condition. Under Roy’s ownership, the Railton was meticulously restored for use in vintage racing events as well as shows. The car raced on a regular basis at Watkins Glen, Mid-Ohio and Nelson Ledges racecourses. After Roy’s passing in 1982, the car remained in storage until 2007 when his son sold the car to the Bray Collection.

Upon purchasing the Railton, the car was once again restored. The white color was changed to a more proper, dark metallic British racing green and a new top was installed. The result was not only a car that looked great, but drove great as well. As a testament to the Railton’s restoration, the car received its Primary and Senior awards by the Classic Car Club of America. The car was also successfully campaigned on many long distance driving events including the Classic Car Club of America’s weeklong tour in Thomasville, Georgia.

Today, the car remains in excellent condition. The original coach built alloy body remains in excellent condition with good fender and hood fitment as well as even gaps and margins on the doors. The paint shows extremely well. The interior is very nice and there is a full tonneau cover.

The drop-center wire wheels have been fitted with new, radial tires and retain the proper knock-off wheel caps. An unusual feature on this Railton is the hydraulic adjustable shock absorbers, which are controlled from the driver’s seat. For reliable driving, a contemporary transmission with an overdrive has been installed. The rear axle has been updated as well.

This car retains all of its original trim items including a set of period Marchal headlamps with matching fender lights and period taillights. The instrument panel retains all of its correct period gauges and controls including the proper Smith oil pressure gauge, speedometer, trip odometer, temperature gauge, fuel gauge, tachometer. and the original Brooklands four spoke banjo steering wheel.

Railtons are considered to be quite rare in today’s collector car marketplace. Very few survive today and there are even fewer in the United States. Most of the Railtons built were fitted with formal bodies such as sedans and drop head coupes. Very few sporting models were built and, of those built, even fewer exist. This example is extremely desirable not only because of its Alpine Trials racing history but also retains its original coachwork, engine and drivetrain. Its restoration has been done to very accurate standards, both cosmetically and mechanically. Railtons are recognized as Full Classics by the prestigious Classic Car Club of America and are also considered highly competitive and reliable automobiles for vintage racing events.

The asking price is 95,000.00 USD

The Railton is located near Detroit, Michigan. I have nearly 100 photographs and more information which I can send to those who are interested. Of course, we would like you to come and see the car and take it for a fun drive.
