In its prime, Lagonda was a manufacturer of fine sporting machines. Today, it is a famous marque that requires no introduction to the knowledgeable enthusiast. Its 3-Litre model, which was made from 1928 to 1934, featured an impressive overhead-valve six-cylinder engine displacing 2,931 cc with seven main bearings. The 3-Litre was often fitted with beautifully proportioned bodywork, with the Tourer style cutting an athletic shape that was influenced by Lagonda’s endeavours in motorsport.

Registered on 21 October 1930 with the London registration “GK 3295”, chassis number Z9773 left the Staines factory with the desirable T2 Lagonda-built Tourer body and the more powerful 3.0-litre straight-six engine. While its early history is unknown, some years later this example was logged as being owned by Mr C Lee of Wembley in July 1961, per the Lagonda Club records. Two years later, it featured in the hit television show The Avengers, where the car was driven by the lead character John Steed, played by Patrick Macnee, in two episodes.

Following its short stint in television, chassis Z9773 was acquired by its most recent owner, the late Mr Edward ‘Ted’ Widgery, sometime towards the end of 1966. Having just obtained his driving licence, Mr Widgery became known for driving his Lagonda 3-Litre Tourer wherever and whenever. A passionate pre-war motoring enthusiast, he drove thousands of miles in this Lagonda over six decades. This involved participating in various Vintage Sports-Car Club events, where he was an active member. The car was featured in a Motor Sport magazine article in October 1996 and throughout Mr Widgery’s custodianship, the Lagonda has been maintained and enjoyed thoroughly.

Today, chassis Z9773 presents nicely, still sporting the period-correct Lagonda touring body and powered by the correct type 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine. Having been kept in storage for the past few years, it is recommended to conduct an inspection and servicing for the car prior to extensive road use.
