Circa 1930s Restored Vintage Caravan with believed to be First World War Carriage Components; fully renovated; electric hook up; including a copy of a newspaper dated 1918 found on an interior shelf
This charming and highly unusual vintage caravan is believed to date from the 1930s, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully restored example retaining a wealth of original character and period features.
According to previous ownership history, the caravan is fitted with an axle and wheels originating from a First World War-era carriage, adding significantly to its historical interest. Further period details include brass/nickel wheel nuts and an impressive set of original leaded windows, all of which have been preserved with the exception of one replacement window.
Remarkably, when acquired by the current owners, the caravan remained largely untouched. It had reportedly spent many years stored inside a barn and, despite the barn being opened during this period, the caravan itself was never moved outdoors, resulting in minimal exposure to the elements.
Evidence of its fascinating past was discovered during restoration, including a newspaper dated 1918 found on an interior shelf. A First World War military uniform was also reportedly discovered within the caravan, although this was removed and sold prior to the current ownership.
Originally built without electrical or gas installations, the caravan has since benefited from sympathetic improvements to enhance usability while respecting its historic integrity. It has been professionally rewired for electricity and requires only a plug fitting to the external lead to complete the installation. The original felt roof has been replaced with a durable fibreglass roof, ensuring improved weather protection and longevity.
The current owners have undertaken careful restoration works, including insulating the floor and sections of the walls, whilst preserving the caravan's authentic charm. Original features have been retained wherever possible, notably the delightful cupboard door separating the lounge and kitchen area from the bedroom compartment.
Combining genuine period character, intriguing wartime associations and thoughtful restoration, this distinctive vintage caravan would make an exceptional addition to any collection of historic caravans, classic vehicles or period memorabilia. Equally suited for display at shows and events, it offers a rare glimpse into early mobile leisure travel and represents an increasingly scarce piece of social history.
Prospective purchasers are encouraged to satisfy themselves regarding the caravan's exact age and provenance; however, the available history and surviving original features make this a particularly appealing and evocative example.
Please beware this would not be suitable for towing on the road.
